Economic stimulus checks are coming from the feds to the USVI:
"April 28, 2008 -- The Virgin Islands government will soon receive $41.5 million from the U.S. Treasury to give $600 checks to most of the territory's taxpayers.Congress passed a $150 billion dollar economic stimulus package earlier in the year calling for cash rebates to every taxpayer, with the goal of jump starting the economy with a rush of consumer spending. Those with direct deposit of their taxes began getting money in their accounts Monday. But the rebates put the Virgin Islands and other territories with tax systems tied to the federal rates in a bind. Because the territory collects income taxes locally at the rates set for federal income tax, the rebate checks would have come directly out of the V.I. government till, putting the budget $41.5 million in the hole."

I mean this is great news, who couldn't use some free money - but really - does it amount to anything more than a drop in the bucket? And doesn't it add to the deficit? I just don't see the longer term planning in moves like this.
Posted by: Anthony at April 29, 2008 06:42 AMOn an individual level, I am sceptical. Do you think we will ever see these funds? This is my first year in the VI and I am still amazed that I filed my taxes in early February and still haven't seen my refund check.
Will the VI Government really distribute funds for this or tax refunds?
Posted by: at April 29, 2008 10:42 AMThat is a great question. I heard stories about tax refunds being late in the USVI, but when I lived there and filed I always received mine on time. I hope that this administration will handle this in a timely manner.
